Magnetic Sensors Provide Key Telematic Solutions
for Mobile Navigation, Position Detection,
and Location Based Services |
| Honeywell
has a low-cost telematic solution for you!
Our magnetic sensors and sensing solutions
offer the dead reckoning and pointing elements
needed for vehicle and mobile wireless platforms
using telematics. Whether you are an OEM or
aftermarket telematics equipment or subsystem
provider, we have the platform position sensing
solution by sensing the earth's magnetic field
and providing accurate heading information.
When combined with platform tilt, acceleration,
and/or Global Position System (GPS), a complete
customer information system is created for
safety, mobility, and convenience. |
| |
With
headings provided by magnetic sensors, map
displays and direction/mapping applications
are more useful than with GPS alone. Add to
the basic position information by Telematics
Service Providers, and Traffic
Avoidance, Time to Destination, and Weather/Road
Hazard data can be combined to give customers
travel options previously unimagined. Honeywell
sensors not only provide earth's magnetic
field detection and relative direction, but
also contain patented features to cancel vehicle
stray fields that can confound lesser magnetic
sensors.
As
a subset of Telematics, Location Based Services
(LBS) take advantage of user location and
heading to create opportunities for customer
information inquiries, and geographic based
marketing. LBS "pull" opportunities
are customer data mining by creating a location/direction
profile and filtering local LBS provider directory
of products/services as the customer travels
towards their destination. For example, a
traveler on a freeway making a request to
update a map display on upcoming McDonald's
restaurants and corresponding exit ramp numbers.
LBS "push" opportunities are LBS
service provider information that is provided
to customers in the form of advertising, traffic
alerts, weather conditions, and tourist attractions.
An example would be state/national provided
information on upcoming scenic overlooks and
local parks. |

| The
HMC Family of Magnetic Sensors for Telematics |
Honeywell
Solid State Electronics Center offers several
magnetic sensors for earth's magnetic field
sensing. The HMC102X family of magneto-resistive sensors are miniature
components that include integral offset strap
coils for each sensitive axis to null out
vehicle chassis magnetic stray fields. Used
singly or in combination, the HMC102X magnetic
sensors create compass headings for two-axis
or three-axis (tilt-compensated) direction
finding. The +/-6 gauss linear range and 20
gauss saturation threshold provide plenty
of range while preserving magnetic resolution
below a milli-gauss.

For very compact handheld and windshield mount
applications, the sub-miniature HMC104X and HMC105X family
of magnetic field sensors preserves precious
circuit board real estate in several package
styles. An example is the HMC1052L in a 3
by 3 by 0.9mm LCC package perfect for low-cost
platforms in tight spaces. The HMC1051, HMC1052,
and HMC1053 have the same magnetic field sensing
characteristics as the HMC102X family. |

| For
drop-in mobile/vehicle Telematics solutions,
Honeywell also offers the HMR line of compass
solutions to provide two and three-axis compass
designs. Product designers may also choose
the HMC1055 Compass Chip Set for developing
custom three-axis, tilt-compensated compass
platforms with a MEMSIC MEMs accelerometer
for tilt sensing. Click here for more information
