Honeywell's Magnetic Sensors offer a Low-Cost Solution for Vehicle Recognition and Vehicle Detection Systems
 
Whether mounted in the pavement, or alongside vehicle traffic lanes, Honeywell's magneto-resistive sensor technology offers high sensitivity solutions for detecting vehicles. From bicycles to fork lifts to automobiles to locomotives to airplanes, these vehicles contain ferrous materials that disturb the uniform intensity and direction of the earth's magnetic field. Depending on ferrous material content and proximity to the sensors, vehicle disturbances of the earth's magnetic field from 15 meters or more can be detected. Automobiles can easily be detected within one meter of the sensor without significant discrimination circuitry. Typical applications include door opening, safety crossbar operation, traffic monitoring, parking space detection, and vehicle location/positioning.
 
Combinations of sensors can be used with enhanced signal processing to do vehicle recognition/signature collection task. Additionally small displacements of identically oriented sensors can be used to determine vehicle direction and speed information. Because Honeywell's magnetic sensors are very small and environmentally robust, they make cost-effective implementations and retrofits for detecting vehicles and traffic.

The HMC Family of Magnetic Sensor Products
Honeywell Solid State Electronics Center offers a complete line of HMC magnetic sensor devices suitable for magnetic vehicle detection applications. The following summarizes the candidate sensors and sensing solution for vehicle detection:
  • The HMC1001 1-axis and HMC1002 2-axis magnetic sensors offer the highest magnetic field sensitivity for applications requiring the most discrimination.
  • The HMC1021 1-axis and HMC1022 2-axis magnetic sensors a more compact solution for magnetic field disturbances, with the HMC1023 3-axis sensor array providing all three orthogonal vectors of magnetic field measurement.
  • The HMC1051 1-axis, HMC1052 2-axis, and HMC1053 3-axis magnetic sensors feature the ultimate in low cost, compact magnetic field sensor products.
  • The HMC2003 magnetic sensor hybrid is a circuit board based design featuring the HMC1001/HMC1002 sensors and instrumentation amplifiers offering a complete factory calibrated 3-axis magnetic sensor array and signal conditioning for drop-in sensing solutions.
  • The HMR2300 Smart Digital Magnetometer offers a complete RS-232 or RS-485 interface modular solution to magnetic field disturbance detection suitable for proof-of-concept data gathering, or in high-end applications needing a convenient digital interface.
